Agri projects

Some of Tag's agriculture projects

From Rwanda to Sri Lanka, From Myanmar to Kenya

Youth/Rwanda

Tag teamed up with Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village (ASYV), a remarkable project to house and teach orphans and other vulnerable young adults from across Rwanda.

Situated on 40 acres of land, the village provided an optimal opportunity for developing a model farm and agricultural training center. The project introduced new crop varieties, drip irrigation technology, beehive development and a nursery for saplings.

Tag and ASYV provided agricultural training to the 500 youth living in the village. The project has the support of the regional governor and has the blessing of Rwanda’s Ministry of Agriculture.

Pollination/Myanmar

With support from the agriculture company Syngenta, Tag ran a pollinator project in Myanmar to promote awareness about protecting beneficial pollinators (honey bees) as well as reducing harmful exposure to the risk of agro-chemicals due to incorrect application and lack of protective equipment.

The project piloted an integrated agricultural education program in which the farming and pollination aspects are synchronized, leading to benefits to both smallholder households and beekeepers through:
     • Agro-chemicals safety education and pollination related
       awareness raising activities
     • Demonstration plots for testing additional crops to replace
and add to the existing crops that attract bees
     • Testing/developing specific protocols for safe use of agro-
chemicals in orchards during honey flow seasons or
migratory seasons when bees are present.

Irrigation/Sri Lanka

About 40 farmers  received training at the Tag/Sarvodaya Agriculture Training and Development Center. Tag provided the demonstration farm with 20 Netafim Family Drip System irrigation kits, including training from Netafim staff, helping the farmers to saves both water and time and increase yields.

Tag also ran a workshop entitled “The Farm as a Business,” to foster the transformation from subsistence to business farming. Twenty-six farmers from the surrounding villages attended the workshop. This work was part of a more extensive collaboration with Sarvodaya on community development.
